Our institutions do not represent the demographic makeup of our nation in their boards, staffing, collections, and audiences; they remain intransigently white in all but a few cases. Too often we talk about the need for diversity and inclusion in economic terms–necessary to the financial future of our organization–rather than humanist terms–necessary to the future health of society. The Empathetic Museum aims to reframe the conversation and proposes a holistic approach that cuts to the core of our institutional systems and structures.
