Every so often we at The Empathetic Museum experience a wave of comments against empathy. It may be on social media; in a museum conference session; or in a discussion on Zoom.
Empathy is assumed to be a weak and passive human response, and then is criticized for being ineffective. Perhaps because “empathy” is a buzzword right now, it is tossed around without much thought or understanding.
This article examines empathy in the context of another word getting lots of attention today: antiracism, We believe they are related, and not just for the moment.
